Australian Qualifications

There are many ways to look at the types of qualifications offered at Australian education institutions. However the concerned goverment authority Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is the national policy for regulated qualifications in Australian education and training. It incorporates the qualifications from each education and training sector into a single comprehensive national qualifications framework. Thus it is a good idea to explain the classification of the Australian qualifications as determined by AQF.

English

In most countries there is no control over ESL teaching. In Australia the government regulates the English teaching industry to make sure that all international students receive a high quality of instruction. For this Australian goverment promotes ELICOS courses. ELICOS programs have been designed for students who require English language training before commencing formal studies in Australia. There are other English language programs that a student can do, but the Australian government has an official ELICOS student visa especially for students who do one of these courses.

The letters in the word 'ELICOS' stand for the first letters of Australia's 'English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students':
