Student Visa Requirements

General requirements:
 

The General requirements you must meet include that: ·

 

You are of good character. ·

You are of sound health. ·

You have acceptable health insurance through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for yourself and members of your family unit accompanying you to Australia. Refer to OSHC on page 5. ·

You have no outstanding debts to the Commonwealth of Australia.

,Where you are under 18 years of age, acceptable arrangements for your accommodation, support and general welfare are in place. ·

If you are in Assessment Level 2, 3, 4 or 5, do not hold a student visa and are applying in Australia, you must provide exceptional reasons to justify the grant of your visa. 

 

These are the "general" requirements. For detailed documentry requirements, please see below.

 

Detailed Requirements:
 

You must meet the following specific requirements to be eligible for this visa.

 

 

1. Accepted in full-time study; 

You must be accepted for full-time study in a registered course or part of a registered course to be eligible for this visa. Note: A registered course is an education or training course offered by an Australian education provider registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). You should provide the electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) certificate(s) and/or letter of offer issued by your education provider for the course(s) you are undertaking.

 

 

2. Genuine temporary entrant requirement

Your individual circumstances must demonstrate that you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily.The factors that are considered during assessment of the genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement include: your personal circumstances in your home country, your potential circumstances in Australia, the value of the course to your future, your immigration history, and any other matter that is relevant to your intention to remain in Australia temporarily. If you are a minor the intentions of your parent, legal guardian or spouse will also be considered.The information provided in your application form and supporting documentation will be used to assess the GTE requirement. You may be requested to provide additional information in relation to the factors set out above. 

 

 

3.Financial requirements

You must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for yourself, your partner and your dependent children for the duration of your stay in Australia. You must also have enough money to support your partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with you to Australia. If an employer or Corporation is sponsoring you, they must conduct commercial activities outside the country in which it is based. They must also employ you in a role in relation to which your principal course is of direct relevance.

 

 

4.Health requirements

You must meet certain health requirements and may need to undergo a health examination. The requirements vary based on:

 

  • your length of stay in Australia 

  • other health risks in your home country or countries you have visited for more than three months within the last five years.

 

Health examinations can be completed before you lodge your visa application, but no more than six months before your course starts. Click here to get more information on it.

 

 

Health insurance

 

You must have health insurance while in Australia. Health insurance can be provided by obtaining Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) which provides medical and hospital insurance.You can ask your education provider to organise OSHC for you, or you can select an approved OSHC provider yourself and pay the insurance.

 

If you are studying at more than one educational provider and both are arranging OSHC, you will have to ensure that there is no gap between policies. This means that as one policy expires the next commences immediately.OSHC is available for a period of up to five years. If your course exceeds five years in length, then OSHC providers may issue cover for a longer period. When you lodge your application, you must provide a receipt or other proof of your OSHC payment. The OSHC should commence when you arrive in Australia.

 

 

5. English language skills

You must also prove your English proficiency. The table below outlines the English language skills you require and the evidence you must provide for the grant of your first student visa or a subsequent student visa.

  

You must provide test results of one of the following:

 

a) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Certificate

 

IELTS test score of:

5.5 or above for direct entry into a course; or

5.0 with an ELICOS course to be taken before your main course. You can study a preliminary English course for up to 20 weeks.

Note: You can take the Academic or General IELTS test to meet English Language requirements for a student visa. However, please check with your Australian education provider about which test they require for your enrolment.

 

b) Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Certificate

 

TOEFL iBT score of:

46 or above for direct entry into a course; or

35 with an ELICOS course to be taken before your main course. You can study a preliminary English course for up to 20 weeks.

 

c) Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic Certificate

 

PTE Academic score of:

42 or above for direct entry into a course; or

36 with an ELICOS course to be taken before your main course. You can study a preliminary English course for up to 20 weeks.

 

d) Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Certificate

 

CAE test score of:

47 or above for direct entry into a course; or

41 with an ELICOS course to be taken before your main course. You can study a preliminary English course for up to 20 weeks.

 

e) Occupational English Test (OET) Certificate

 

OET score of 'pass'

 

f) TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT) Certificate (This test is only acceptable if taken in one of the following countries where IELTS is not available: Belarus, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Moldova, Solomon Islands, Suriname, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda and Uzbekistan.)

 

TOEFL PBT test score of:

527 or above for direct entry into a course; or

500 with an ELICOS course to be taken before your main course. You can study a preliminary English course for up to 20 weeks.

Note: Tests older than two years are not acceptable.

 

 

6. Academic record and history

If you are applying for your first student visa, you must provide evidence that you have successfully completed Year 12 or equivalent, by providing school reports and academic records.If you are applying for a subsequent student visa, you must provide evidence that you have successfully completed Year 12, and academic reports and previous records of attendance from your studies in Australia, to show that you satisfied the course requirements.

 

 

7. Character requirements

You must be of good character to enter Australia. The information you provide on the 'Character Declaration' section of your application will be used to assess your character.

 

 

 

Students under 18 years of age

 

You must meet all the above, and the additional eligibility requirements.If you are aged 18 years or over, you must declare that you will respect Australian values and obey the laws of Australia. For this visa, the values statement is included in the general declaration section of the application form. When you sign the application form it means you will also be signing the values statement. You will not be required to have read the Life in Australia book, but may do so if you wish.

 

 

 

It is extremely importnat to note that all these are the "fundamental" decription of the documents required for the Australian student visa. You MUST not reply only on these documents. There may be a large number of supporting documents, attached to the basic required documents. Moreover, the actual required documents for Australian Student Visa will depend upon the following factors:

 

  1. Your Assessment Level.

  2. Your Visa Type/Class

  3. Your personal circumstances (like your immigration history, academic history, English proficiency, working history, financial circumstances, family details etc.)
